Position: Naturalist Status: Seasonal, Full-time, Non-Exempt
(May 26-August 14, 2026 approximately) Department: Visitor
Interpretative Center (VIC) Reports to: Education and Outreach
Manager Compensation: $19.00 per hour Position Description: The
seasonal full-time Naturalist is responsible for supporting
interpretive programming focused on the natural history and ecology
of the Adirondack region to foster a connection to the natural
world with visitors. In addition, the position will assist in
developing and evaluating programs and supporting communications
with social media and blog posts, with support and direction from
the Education and Outreach Manager. Educational Duties and
Responsibilities (65%) Assist the Education and Outreach Manager in
planning, coordinating, and delivering interpretive programs,
guided hikes, presentations, and workshops for diverse audiences
focused on the natural history and ecology of the Adirondack
region. Develop and maintain educational and interpretive
materials, including displays, lesson plans, and activity guides.
Outreach Duties and Responsibilities (20%) Contribute to social
media, newsletters, and blog posts by providing engaging content
such as photos, stories, and updates about VIC programs and events.
Participate in outreach initiatives to promote environmental
awareness, stewardship, and community involvement. Support public
and special events, including arts, culture, and recreation-based
programs. Other (15%) Provide excellent customer service to
visitors by sharing information about local ecosystems, wildlife,
and responsible outdoor recreation. Assist with administrative
tasks, program evaluation, and record-keeping as needed. Perform
other duties as assigned to support VIC operations and Paul Smith?s
College?s mission of environmental education and stewardship.
Qualifications and Preferences: Required education includes a
minimum of a bachelor?s degree in environmental science, biology,
ecology, education, or a related field. Passion for nature,
conservation, and environmental education. Strong public speaking
and communication skills. Experience working with children and the
public in an educational setting. Basic knowledge of local flora,
fauna, and ecosystems (training may be provided). Knowledge of or
interest in Adirondack natural history and ecology. Ability to work
weekends and events. Reliable transportation to and from work.
Ability to work with a broad range of diverse individuals and
groups to form a safe and inclusive workplace. Preferred
Qualifications: Certification in at least one of the following or
willingness to obtain: First aid/CPR, Wilderness First Aid, or
Wilderness First Responder. Physical Requirements: Environmental
Conditions Work is performed in an indoor office setting with
normal temperature ranges for the season AND outdoors in all
weather conditions and temperatures. Traditional noise of a busy
office setting can be expected. Lifting and Carrying Ability to
lift 25 pounds and travel short distances over uneven surfaces.
Mobility Ability to bend, stoop, and kneel to pick up items, as
necessary. Climbing various staircases across the campus to engage
in meetings and/or presentations. Capable of walking unassisted on
uneven surfaces 1-3 miles per day. Ability to hike/snowshoe several
miles on gentle, rolling hiking trails with a mix of terrain
including roots, rocks, boardwalks. Utilize mobility assistive
devices and equipment, as necessary. Prolonged periods of standing,
walking, and moving to complete daily tasks. Ability to

Hand-Eye Coordination Manual dexterity for handling small
office-related objects. Fine motor skills for work performed on
laptop. Infrequent need to reach overhead or below shoulder level
to perform work duties. Requires precise hand-eye coordination to
operate tools, machinery, or equipment safely and effectively. Must
maintain good hand-eye coordination and depth perception while
performing physical or mechanical tasks. Sensory Requirements Good
vision, including color vision, with corrective lenses, as
necessary. Good hearing with assistive devices, as necessary. Paul
