The Controls Engineer has direct responsibility for implementing design and verification of new control system applications for Hoosick Falls. This includes equipment upgrades associated with the production of products at Hoosick Falls, NY.
The Controls Engineer is responsible for the full impact of his/her projects on the manufacturing operation, including Environmental, Health and Safety, Quality, and Cost. Application of LEAN tools (VSM, Visual Management, and 5S) and Project Management tools (Gant Chart, Management of Change) are critical aspects of this position. Definition and measurement of project savings are integral to this position. Development of procedures, maintenance documentation and training will be required on most projects.
The Controls Engineer will report to the Engineering Manager and have primary responsibility for the implementation of new controls projects and upgrades impacting Hoosick Falls equipment and facilities. The Controls Engineer will also have responsibility for leading the Management of Change Process for all activities affecting Hoosick Falls equipment and facilities.
Additional responsibilities include:

  • Provide control engineering leadership for new developments in equipment and process. Identify savings opportunities; work with process engineering to quantify payback.
  • Perform on-site activities that include maintaining the Industrial Network, Ethernet systems, configuration of switches and routers, network integration with third party components, testing and troubleshooting networks, performing system tests with reports as required, and optimizing existing networks.
  • Suggest, plan and execute projects to improve equipment reliability, reduce cycle times, improve safety, reduce costs, improve quality, reduce scrap, maintain and improve facilities. Train personnel in use of project management tools.
  • Recommend and implement capital programs and write appropriation requests.
  • Confers with vendors to determine product specifications and arrange for purchase of equipment, materials or parts for Capital Projects.
  • Negotiate with, supervise and coordinate work with outside suppliers and contractors.
  • Directs and coordinates construction, installation and maintenance activities to insure conformance of products and systems to engineering design and customer specifications.
  • Participates in cost improvement/productivity improvement projects. Works on both short and long term projects of different varieties. Evaluation of alternate equipment suppliers and contractors.
  • Exhibits safety awareness and safe work practices. Suggest and implement safety improvements in the facilities. Perform Internal Audits as directed to support ISO9001/14001 programs.
  • Use SPC and other statistical methods to evaluate impact of proposed and completed projects.
  • Familiar with local building codes and OSHA/NEC regulations.
  • Must be a self-starter who can work well with people at all levels both in and out of the plant.

    Education Requirements:
    • Bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline (electrical or mechanical)
      Work Experience/Requirements:
      • Minimum of 5 years experience in manufacturing systems design or capital project engineering
      • Minimum of 5 years of experience in programming/developing/troubleshooting/configuring PLC, HMI, DCS, and SCADA software for control systems, including control panel designs and line integration
      • Proficiency with the following software: Rockwell, Autocad, Soildworks, SQL server, Panelview, RS view, FactoryTalk; Preferred.
        • Experience implementing and/or maintaining Allen-Bradley controls/controllers and PLCs (Siemens and Mitsubishi control system experience is a plus)
        • Experience with motion control to include Servo Drives, VFD's and Stepper Drives
        • Experience with Vision Systems and Robots is a plus
        • Knowledge in network infrastructure with a focus on how it relates to the automation systems
        • Strong ability to interpret electrical schematics and mechanical prints
          • Computer (PC), data collection, and analysis skills necessary to fulfill job responsibilities
          • Math skills necessary to fulfill job responsibilities (includes SPC, statistics, DOE, etc.)
          • General knowledge of manufacturing machinery and basic mechanical aptitude
