The State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill is an accredited polytechnic college that is primarily baccalaureate and residential. SUNY Cobleskill is one of few institutions in the United States where an undergraduate student may also choose to earn an associate degree. Job Description:
The Department of Plant Science at The State University of New York College of Agriculture and Technology at Cobleskill (SUNY Cobleskill) invites applications for a tenure-track Soil Science and Soil Ecology full-time faculty position to support the department with course instruction at Associate's and Baccalaureate level. The soil science position will include leadership for and instruction of Introduction to Soil Science as a broad-based service course and instruction of additional courses in Soil Fertility and Composting. This position will also require coordination of part-time instructors assisting in co-teaching Introduction to Soil Science lab sections. This position is a 10-month, 100% teaching appointment with expectations of developing greater opportunities to deliver courses in online, hybrid, and intensive summer modes, as well as strengthen traditional, in-person course delivery. Most departmental courses include equal instruction time between lecture and applied lab formats. Additional teaching opportunities within the Plant Science department are flexible, based on the capacity to take on other courses the department offers, as well as individual abilities, interests and professional growth plans. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic about creating an educational environment that is innovative and inspiring to students, and collaborative with other faculty in the department and at the University. In addition to teaching, faculty are also expected to engage in departmental, institutional, and community service. These may include program assessment, student recruitment, club advisement, mentoring of undergraduate student research, grantsmanship, faculty-led international programs, and independent research and consulting. Further, there is an expectation that the faculty member will make connects with New York State Agriculture and Natural Resources stakeholders to help address needs at the local, state and national levels.
Requirements:
Minimum Qualifications

  • A Master's degree closely related with Soil Science
  • Relevant industry experience
  • Grant writing experience
  • Project and research management Preferred Qualifications In addition to the aforementioned minimum qualifications, it is preferred the candidate also have:--
    • An earned doctorate or A.B.D. (all but dissertation) related to Soil Science including Agronomy, Ag Sciences, Plant Sciences, Environmental Studies, or other closely related fields
    • 2+ years of experience teaching college-level soil and plant sciences or related courses
    • 1-2 years (2,000 to 4,000 hours) of relevant industry experience
    • Grant writing and management experience *All earned graduate degrees must be from an accredited university. USCES will evaluate all foreign transcripts. Skills and Abilities:
      Ability to teach in the classroom, laboratory, and small groups:
      • Soil Management
      • Chemical and Physical aspects of soil
      • Lab and field soil analysis
      • Fertilization program planning and applications
      • Soil Biology or Ecology
      • Environmental rules and regulations
      • Soil as part of crop productivity and suitability
      • Soil analysis and soil characteristics
      • Ability to analyze data and information to determine crop and land use feasibility
      • Composting techniques and technologies
      • Soil and water conservation
      • Commercial, small scale, and organic agriculture practices concerning soil productivity and soil management A Candidate should be confident in their ability to:
        • Read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English. Bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred.
        • Organize records and course materials
        • Troubleshoot and multi-tasking
        • Use MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint is essential
        • Employ course management programs such as Moodle or Blackboard
        • Use distance learning platforms such as ZOOM, MS Teams or Blackboard Collaborate
        • Develop collaborative and productive relationships with internal and external partners
        • To be flexible with work schedules to meet campus or program obligations to include by not limited to weekends and evenings.
        • To work with minimum supervision
        • To be trustful and respectful to all students, staff and visitors

              Additional Information:
              • This is a 10-month, full-time position.
              • The salary range for this position is $50,000 - $55,000.
              • This position will begin August 2021.
